HIPPA

Eligibility for HIPPA (Continuation of Benefits):
  • The individual must have at least 18 months of creditable coverage without a significant break in coverage.
  • The individual's most recent coverage must have been under a group health plan.
  • The individual cannot currently be eligible for Medicare or Medicaid or covered under any other health insurance.
  • The individual has both elected and exhausted any continuation coverage available under COBRA or a similar state program.
You can be denied continuation of your health plan under HIPPA for:
  • Nonpayment of premiums
  • Defrauding the carrier
  • Termination of the group plan plan
  • Relocating outside the coverage area
  • Termination of an association membership (if your initial health plan was though one)
Benefits:

  • Guaranteed continuation of your health coverage after COBRA expires
  • Pre existing conditiond don't effect your coverage
Drawbacks:

  • Prices are high
  • You can't carry current health benefits or your current plan or policy with you when moving from one health plan or policy to another
  • does not require plans to offer specific benefits
  • Premiums, copayments, and deductibles may differ
  • Your insurance coverage may be discontinued if your employer failed to pay premiums, committed fraud, or violated participation or contribution rules.
